“Where there is vision, there is provision.”
I don’t remember when I first heard that phrase, or who said It, but the vision to be a midwife began in the early 80’s around the time I gave birth to my 2nd son. I had always LOVED babies and been interested in birth. Even as a little girl, if I overheard a conversation that had anything to do with having babies, I was all ears!
In high school, I had decided to go to college to be a nurse. The goal was to some day work with pregnant and birthing women, but as I progressed through my OB rotations, I was disturbed by how the women were treated so impersonally. Most of them knew very little about what was happening with their bodies, and if they dared to ask questions, they were scorned or belittled. I had had 2 hospital births myself, by this time and had similar experiences. In a psychology class, I met a midwife and she loaned the book, Spiritual Midwifery. What an eye opener!
Two years later I was taking a “break” from school and pregnant with my 3rd son. When I began my search for a midwife, I let my fingers do the walking. I found a lovely midwife in the Yellow Pages and the journey began. I loved everything about my experience! I knew this was what I was called to do, but the timing was off.
Fast forward 20 years. I now had 4 boys and and was a single mom. In 2001, I met the most incredible man and a short time later, we married. He brought with him my 2 bonus kids - another son and FINALLY a daughter! One day, while driving down the road, he asked me a simple question that reignited the dream I had long buried. “ If you could be anything in the world, what would you be?” Without hesitation, I told him I would be a midwife! His next question was, “Why aren’t you doing that?” I began tell him all the excuses I could think of - going back to school, money, time away from family and just the doubt that I didn’t know if I could do it. With every hurdle I mentioned, he had a solution. This happened in November 2004. By May of the following year, we had saved my entire tuition, a dear friend had given me a generous gift that allowed me to purchase all of my books and much of the equipment I would need to get started, and I had found my first preceptor. I could hardly believe it! I was finally on my journey!
Two years later, I graduated from The Association of Texas Midwives, took the NARM exam and got my license On my 46th birthday! I love working with families and helping them as they bring their precious babies into the world and discovering the amazing things their bodies are capable of!
